FAQs
Frequently Asked Question

Q. How do I make a referral for myself or someone else?
Referrals can be made by emailing the name of the patient, along with address, phone number, ALL insurance information (primary and secondary), date of birth and location of wound or problem to mywoundcare@firstcoastwoundcare.com
The same information can be faxed to 904-341-5529 or called into the office at 904-599-6131, but email is preferred so we can reply with any questions or confirmation.
Q. How do I know when I will be seen by the specialist?
After your chart is created and your insurance has been verified, we will call you to schedule your visit. Please refer to the patient information tab for more information.
Q. How long does it take to get my first visit?
Typically if we get your referral by Thursday at 5pm, we can get you scheduled the following week.
Q. What happens if my nurse is supposed to come see me the same day as the wound specialist?
Please call your home care company and have them move the visit. Explain that the wound care will be done by the Nurse Practitioner.
Q. How long will my wound take to heal?
Since all wounds are different and all patients have multiple factors that could affect wound healing, there is no way to accurately predict wound healing timelines. However, Dr. Lord has a very good track record for healing wounds quickly and without adverse event.
Q. What are the credentials of the wound specialist?
Dr. Lord is a doctorate-prepared Nurse Practitioner, dual board certified from The American Association of Nurse Practitioners as a Family Nurse Practitioner and with The American Board of Wound Healing as a Certified Skin and Wound Specialist. Her credentials are linked on the home page.
Q. What happens if my dressing falls off?
Your home care nurse should have instructed you on emergency dressing changes. Please reach out to your home care company for urgent needs.
Q. What is the difference between the wound specialist and my regular nurse?
Although your nurse may or may not be wound care certified, (s)he cannot write orders for your wound care nor order any diagnostic testing. The wound specialist is not coming out to change the dressing (although she will do that while she is there), she is coming out to assess the ulcer, determine the diagnosis and establish an appropriate Plan of Care for you and the clinical staff that come in to do your care. The nurses will follow her plan of care.
Q. Do I need an order from my primary care doctor to be seen by First Coast Wound Care?
No, most insurance companies do not require a referral from a Primary for wound care. However, we highly recommend informing them of your decision to pursue advanced care, so they know someone is taking care of the ulcer.
Q. What insurances do you accept?
First Coast Wound Care is a participating provider with Medicare, Tricare and Railroad medicare. We also have established with Humana as an in-network provider. So while we are only in network with 4 insurance companies, we do accept all payers out-of network benefits (if you have a policy that includes out of network benefits).
Q. What happens if I get a bill that I can’t pay?
Please reach out to our billing department for a payment plan you can afford.
Q. Can Dr. Lord write prescriptions?
Yes, Dr. Lord is a fully credentialed and autonomous nurse practitioner in the state of Florida. She only operates inside the scope of skin and wound care as per her specialty certification with Medicare.
Q. How do I get my dressing supplies?
Your homecare company is responsible for ordering and obtaining your medical supplies.
